SEVEN PENMAN SPRINGS WINES WIN SEVEN MEDALS AT 2009 SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE WINE COMPETITION
Results of the 2009 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, announced following the judging event on January 5, again proved the consistency of wines produced by Paso Robles’ Penman Springs Vineyard. For the third year in a row, Penman wines took home seven medals – from 2007 to 2009, Penman Springs Vineyard has won 21 medals in the Chronicle competition out of 22 wines entered! Out of this year’s 4,736 entries, the Penman winners were:

  • GOLD – 2006 Penman Springs Vineyard Petite Sirah
  • GOLD – 2006 Penman Springs Vineyard “Artisan Cuvee” Meritage
  • SILVER – 2005 Penman Springs Vineyard “Penman Reserve” Cabernet Sauvignon
  • SILVER – 2006 Penman Springs Vineyard Merlot
  • SILVER – 2007 Penman Springs Vineyard Muscat Blanc “Dry Humor”
  • BRONZE – 2006 Penman Springs Vineyard Syrah
  • BRONZE – 2006 Penman Springs Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon “Old Block”

Owner / Vineyard Manager Carl McCasland and Winemaker Larry Roberts were extremely proud of the results. Quoting Roberts: “I have been working with Penman’s fruit since the first vintage in 1988 and I have seen terrific strides in quality as newly-planted blocks have come into production and as Carl has continued to ‘dial in’ each variety. And we’ve been able to fine tune the winemaking a bit more with each vintage, to the point where I believe we are in the upper echelon of Paso Robles producers. I don’t think there is another winery in the area that can top us for quality across the board.”

SEVEN PENMAN SPRINGS WINES WIN SEVEN MEDALS AT 2007 SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE WINE COMPETITION
Paso Robles’ Penman Springs Vineyard scored awards with every wine they entered at the 2007 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. The major wine judging event was held January 8th and attracted 3,800 wine entries from 1,572 wineries in 20 states. Their results awarded Penman Springs Vineyard with the following medals:

  • GOLD - 2004 Penman Springs Vineyard Merlot (Estate) Paso Robles
  • SILVER - 2004 Penman Springs Vineyard Meritage “Artisan Cuvée” (Estate) Paso Robles

  • BRONZE - 2004 Penman Springs Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon “Old Block” (Estate) Paso Robles
  • BRONZE - 2005 Penman Springs Vineyard Muscat Blanc (Estate) Paso Robles (Dry Alsatian Style)

Penman Springs Vineyard winemaker, Larry Roberts, was very happy and gratified at the news: “This really confirms what (owner) Carl McCasland has been doing over the last few years, particularly with the newer vineyard blocks. As Carl has been getting the farming “dialed in,” I’ve had the chance to try out a few different winemaking ideas with these grapes and we’ve arrived at a “sweet spot” now where virtually the entire Penman lineup is outstanding. I was particularly excited to learn that the GOLD award was for our 2004 Merlot, because I feel the Merlot variety has taken a backseat to most other red varieties of late. But I knew that our ’04 was a dynamite bottle of wine and clearly the best Merlot we’ve ever produced.”
